Unlike ordinary numbers that group in tens and hundreds (base-10), time measurements operate in base-60 (sexagesimal system). When calculating how long a journey takes or converting between 12-hour (a.m./p.m.) and 24-hour systems, regrouping occurs at 60, not 100.

Suppose an express matatu departs Nairobi at 09:30 a.m. and reaches Nakuru at 12:15 p.m. If we mistakenly subtract decimals (\(12.15 - 9.30\)), we get \(2.85\), which has no physical meaning in hours and minutes! Instead, we calculate across the 60-minute boundary:
- From 09:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. = \(30\text{ minutes}\)
- From 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon = \(2\text{ hours}\) (\(120\text{ minutes}\))

Problem: The Madaraka Express train leaves Mombasa at 14:20 and reaches Nairobi Terminus at 19:05. Calculate the exact duration of the journey.
- Convert departure time to minutes past midnight:\[14 \times 60 + 20 = 840 + 20 = 860\text{ minutes}\]
- Convert arrival time to minutes past midnight:\[19 \times 60 + 5 = 1140 + 5 = 1145\text{ minutes}\]
- Subtract departure from arrival:\[1145 - 860 = 285\text{ minutes}\]
- Regroup into hours and minutes:\[285 \div 60 = 4\text{ hours with a remainder of } 45\text{ minutes}\]
Answer: 4 hours 45 minutes (or 285 minutes)
Problem: A cargo lorry leaves Kisumu at 10:45 a.m. and arrives in Eldoret at 2:15 p.m. Find the duration in hours as a decimal, and calculate the total distance covered if the lorry maintained an average speed of 60 km/h.

Mistake: Subtracting clock times like normal decimals (e.g., \(10:15 - 8:45 = 1.70\) or \(1\text{ hour } 70\text{ minutes}\)).
Why it feels right: The colon looks like a decimal point, leading students to use standard column subtraction.
Correction: When borrowing 1 hour in subtraction, you borrow 60 minutes, not 100 minutes. \(10:15\) becomes \(9\text{ h } 75\text{ min}\), and \(9\text{ h } 75\text{ min} - 8\text{ h } 45\text{ min} = 1\text{ h } 30\text{ min}\).
Mistake: Thinking that \(0.5\text{ hours} = 50\text{ minutes}\) or \(2.25\text{ hours} = 2\text{ hours } 25\text{ minutes}\).
Why it feels right: In base-10, 0.5 represents half of 100 (50).
Correction: \(0.5\text{ hour} = 0.5 \times 60 = 30\text{ minutes}\). Similarly, \(0.25\text{ hour} = \frac{1}{4} \times 60 = 15\text{ minutes}\).
