Time

Interactive curriculum lessons, worked examples, and geometric problem-solving techniques designed to help Kenyan students master CBC, KPSEA, KCSE, and IGCSE mathematics.

Grade 06 Pathway: N/A

First Principles

Core Concept: Navigating Time in Base-60

Unlike ordinary numbers that group in tens and hundreds (base-10), time measurements operate in base-60 (sexagesimal system). When calculating how long a journey takes or converting between 12-hour (a.m./p.m.) and 24-hour systems, regrouping occurs at 60, not 100.

Key Axioms:
  • \(1\text{ hour} = 60\text{ minutes}\)
  • \(1\text{ minute} = 60\text{ seconds}\)
  • \(1\text{ day} = 24\text{ hours} = 1440\text{ minutes}\)

Interactive Duration & Clock Converter

Duration: 3 hours 45 minutes (225 minutes)

(a) Concrete Scenario: The Nairobi to Nakuru Matatu

Suppose an express matatu departs Nairobi at 09:30 a.m. and reaches Nakuru at 12:15 p.m. If we mistakenly subtract decimals (\(12.15 - 9.30\)), we get \(2.85\), which has no physical meaning in hours and minutes! Instead, we calculate across the 60-minute boundary:

  • From 09:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. = \(30\text{ minutes}\)
  • From 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon = \(2\text{ hours}\) (\(120\text{ minutes}\))
  • From 12:00 noon to 12:15 p.m. = \(15\text{ minutes}\)
  • Total Elapsed Time: \(30 + 120 + 15 = 165\text{ minutes} = 2\text{ hours } 45\text{ minutes}\).

Key Formulas

Core Formulas & Conversion Rules

1. Hours to Minutes Conversion:\[\text{Total Minutes} = \text{Hours} \times 60\]
2. Minutes to Hours & Minutes:\[\text{Hours} = \left\lfloor \frac{\text{Minutes}}{60} \right\rfloor, \quad \text{Remaining Minutes} = \text{Minutes} \pmod{60}\]
3. 12-Hour to 24-Hour Clock Conversion:
  • Morning (a.m.): Keep the hour digits unchanged (e.g., 07:30 a.m. \(\rightarrow\) 07:30). Note: 12:00 a.m. (midnight) \(\rightarrow\) 00:00.
  • Afternoon/Evening (p.m.): Add 12 to the hour value (e.g., 03:45 p.m. \(\rightarrow\) \(3 + 12 = 15\) \(\rightarrow\) 15:45). Note: 12:00 p.m. (noon) remains 12:00.
4. Time Duration (Universal Minutes from Midnight Method):\[\text{Time from Midnight (min)} = (\text{Hour}_{24} \times 60) + \text{Minute}\]\[\text{Duration} = \text{Arrival Time (min)} - \text{Departure Time (min)}\]

Worked Examples

EASY (1-Step Conversion)

Problem: Convert 3 hours 25 minutes into total minutes.

  1. Identify the conversion factor: \(1\text{ hour} = 60\text{ minutes}\).
  2. Convert hours to minutes: \(3\text{ hours} = 3 \times 60 = 180\text{ minutes}\).
  3. Add leftover minutes: \(180 + 25 = 205\text{ minutes}\).

Answer: 205 minutes

MEDIUM (24-Hour Duration Calculation)

Problem: The Madaraka Express train leaves Mombasa at 14:20 and reaches Nairobi Terminus at 19:05. Calculate the exact duration of the journey.

  1. Convert departure time to minutes past midnight:\[14 \times 60 + 20 = 840 + 20 = 860\text{ minutes}\]
  2. Convert arrival time to minutes past midnight:\[19 \times 60 + 5 = 1140 + 5 = 1145\text{ minutes}\]
  3. Subtract departure from arrival:\[1145 - 860 = 285\text{ minutes}\]
  4. Regroup into hours and minutes:\[285 \div 60 = 4\text{ hours with a remainder of } 45\text{ minutes}\]

Answer: 4 hours 45 minutes (or 285 minutes)

HARD (Multi-Step Duration & Speed-Distance Integration)

Problem: A cargo lorry leaves Kisumu at 10:45 a.m. and arrives in Eldoret at 2:15 p.m. Find the duration in hours as a decimal, and calculate the total distance covered if the lorry maintained an average speed of 60 km/h.

  1. Convert both times to 24-hour clock:
    • Departure: 10:45 a.m. \(\rightarrow\) \(10:45\)
    • Arrival: 2:15 p.m. \(\rightarrow\) \(2 + 12 = 14:15\)
  2. Find total minutes:\[\text{Departure} = 10 \times 60 + 45 = 645\text{ min}\]\[\text{Arrival} = 14 \times 60 + 15 = 855\text{ min}\]\[\text{Duration} = 855 - 645 = 210\text{ min}\]
  3. Convert duration to decimal hours:\[\text{Time in hours} = \frac{210}{60} = 3.5\text{ hours}\]
  4. Compute distance (\(\text{Distance} = \text{Speed} \times \text{Time}\)):\[\text{Distance} = 60\text{ km/h} \times 3.5\text{ h} = 210\text{ km}\]

Answer: Duration = 3.5 hours (3 hours 30 min); Distance = 210 km

Common Mistakes

1. The Base-10 Decimal Fallacy

Mistake: Subtracting clock times like normal decimals (e.g., \(10:15 - 8:45 = 1.70\) or \(1\text{ hour } 70\text{ minutes}\)).

Why it feels right: The colon looks like a decimal point, leading students to use standard column subtraction.

Correction: When borrowing 1 hour in subtraction, you borrow 60 minutes, not 100 minutes. \(10:15\) becomes \(9\text{ h } 75\text{ min}\), and \(9\text{ h } 75\text{ min} - 8\text{ h } 45\text{ min} = 1\text{ h } 30\text{ min}\).

2. Misinterpreting Decimal Fractions of an Hour

Mistake: Thinking that \(0.5\text{ hours} = 50\text{ minutes}\) or \(2.25\text{ hours} = 2\text{ hours } 25\text{ minutes}\).

Why it feels right: In base-10, 0.5 represents half of 100 (50).

Correction: \(0.5\text{ hour} = 0.5 \times 60 = 30\text{ minutes}\). Similarly, \(0.25\text{ hour} = \frac{1}{4} \times 60 = 15\text{ minutes}\).

3. The 12-Hour/24-Hour Midnight and Noon Trap

Mistake: Writing 12:30 a.m. as 12:30 in 24-hour time or 12:00 p.m. as 24:00.

Why it feels right: People assume you add 12 to every number with '12'.

Correction: The 24-hour day begins at \(00:00\) (midnight). 12:30 a.m. is \(00:30\). Midday (noon) is \(12:00\), and 12:30 p.m. is \(12:30\).

Real World

Real-World Applications Across Kenya

🚌 Public Transport & SGR Timetables

Kenya Railways uses the 24-hour clock for the SGR Madaraka Express to prevent morning/evening departure confusion. A departure at 15:30 clearly indicates 3:30 p.m.

⚡ KPLC Power Schedules & Industrial Operations

Factories scheduling night-shift production calculate total machine operating hours between 22:00 and 06:00 to optimize off-peak electricity tariffs.

🌾 Tea & Coffee Factory Weigh-in Windows

Tea collection trucks in Kericho must log exact transit durations from buying centres to processing factories so leaves do not ferment during transport.

⚽ Radio Broadcasts & Match Kick-offs

Broadcasters synchronise live match coverage starting at 16:00 with pre-match shows starting 45 minutes prior (15:15).
