Whole Numbers
Interactive curriculum lessons, worked examples, and geometric problem-solving techniques designed to help Kenyan students master CBC, KPSEA, KCSE, and IGCSE mathematics.
First Principles
Objective: By the end of this lesson, you will read, write, compare, and round whole numbers up to seven digits (millions) with confidence.
Interactive Place Value Explorer & Rounder
Tap + / - to build a number up to millions, then pick a place value to round!
(a) Concrete Scenario: Imagine counting visitors at the Nairobi National Park or reading national budget allocations. Numbers grow rapidly into millions. We place commas after every 3 digits from the right to separate periods: Millions, Thousands, and Ones.
(b) Place Value Structure: Each place value position is exactly 10 times larger than the place to its right. For example, 1 Ten-Thousand = \(10 \times 1,000\).
(c) Expanded Form: A large number like \(4,502,310\) represents: \[4,502,310 = (4 \times 1,000,000) + (5 \times 100,000) + (0 \times 10,000) + (2 \times 1,000) + (3 \times 100) + (1 \times 10) + (0 \times 1)\]
Key Formulas
- If neighbor \(\ge 5\): Add 1 to target digit, turn all right digits to 0.
- If neighbor \(< 5\): Target digit remains unchanged, turn all right digits to 0.
Worked Examples
- Identify periods from right to left: 108 (Ones), 725 (Thousands), 4 (Millions).
- The digit 7 is in the Hundred-Thousands position.
- Total Value = \(7 \times 100,000 = 700,000\).
- Answer: Place value is Hundred-Thousands; Total value is 700,000.
- Align by place value:
\(2,458,900\)
\(2,485,100\) - Compare from left to right: Both have \(2\) Millions and \(4\) Hundred-Thousands.
- Compare Ten-Thousands place: Nakuru has \(5\) (50,000), Uasin Gishu has \(8\) (80,000).
- Since \(8 > 5\), \(2,485,100 > 2,458,900\).
- Answer: Uasin Gishu harvested more bags.
- Nearest Ten Thousand: Target digit is 4 (Ten-Thousands). Neighbor to right is 7 (Thousands). Since \(7 \ge 5\), round 4 up to 5. Result: \(3,850,000\) kg.
- Nearest Million: Target digit is 3 (Millions). Neighbor to right is 8 (Hundred-Thousands). Since \(8 \ge 5\), round 3 up to 4. Result: \(4,000,000\) kg.
- Answer: (a) 3,850,000 kg ; (b) 4,000,000 kg.
